Paganka Myco Hub

Key to the Key

This key shows all genera when loaded, unselect the features your mushroom does not have to narrow down the possibilities.

Because this key is only focused on North East United States species sometimes there are only one or two species that represent the genus in this area, and therefore the genus description is based on those species rather than the actual genus. The numbers next to the filter options were what made the javascript work, so just ignore them please. :)

Spore Print Colour Description: I use two spore print colours here, one that is a generalized colour palatte (General Print Color), and one that is more Specific (Exact Print Color). When I was designing this key I wanted to acknowledge that sometimes its hard to tell between colours like dark brown, purplish brown, and chocolate brown, espeicially for those who are new to mycology (and who are more likely to use a key like this).

Here is how you make a spore print: NAMA Spore Print Guide and here is a nice diagram by Danny Miller on the actual colors. If I don't know the genus / family of something I find, I make a spore print.

Habitat, Cap, Stipe, and Gill Descriptions: These align with their corresponding filter and have additional information if it exists.
Additional Features of Note: This contans the Size and Partial Veil filter info, as well as any information that doesn't fall into other categories, like a chemical test.
Similar Genera / Look-alikes: Self Explanatory
NE Genus Species Included: This is more or less what the genus description is based off of if there are not many species of this genus in the NE. Otherwise it serves as a quick link to iNat to see what species people are observing (Doesn't always represent actual species of course, but hopefully with increased DNA sequencing it becomes more and more accurate).
